New Zealand defender Francis Davies goes in for a tackle against the dutch.

The Vantage Black Sticks Women took on top ranked Netherlands overnight in their opening game of the real Four Nations Cup, in Munich, before a crowd of over 1000.

Shiloh Gloyn opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a good field goal to give the Black Sticks an early lead, surprising the current world #1 side, a lead they held throughout a fast paced and entertaining first half.

After a solid opening by the Kiwis the Netherlands proved their class though and two minutes into the second half the Dutch equalised through a Caia van Maasakker penalty corner, to level the scores.

The New Zealanders, while matching their much fancied opponents, gave them too many opportunities which eventually cost them in the dying stages of the match as the Dutch added two more late goals in the last 10 minutes to run out winners 3-1.

"We had a good first half effort and work rate, and were rewarded with a good team goal" said a somewhat philosophical Assistant Coach Sean Dancer.

"Unfortunately we let ourselves down in the second half and gave away too much ball and opportunities, which we really can't do against a quality side like the Dutch.

"We now need to re-focus and be prepared for a tough challenge against Germany tomorrow".

The Vantage Black Sticks Women will play host nation Germany, who were beaten 2-1 by Argentina in the earlier match, on Friday morning, 5:30am NZ time in their second of three matches at the real Four Nations Cup in Munich, Germany
